A Star with a Comet's Tail?!

August 15, 2007: Astronomers using a NASA space telescope, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, have spotted an amazingly long comet-like tail behind a star streaking through space. The star, named Mira after the Latin word for "wonderful," has been a favorite of astronomers for about 400 years, yet this is the first time the tail has been seen. Astronomers noticed what looked like a comet with a gargantuan tail. In fact, material blowing off Mira is forming a wake 13 light-years long, or about 20,000 times the average distance of Pluto from the sun. Nothing like this has ever been seen before around a star. Astronomers Find Largest Exoplanet To Date

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Scientists have discovered the universe's largest known planet, a giant ball made of mostly hydrogen that circles a star 1,400 light-years away. Scientists believe the planet is about twice the size of Jupiter, and has a temperature of 2,300-degrees. MORE

ROADRUNNER JOINS THE CULT

Roadrunner Records announces the signing of multi-platinum artist THE CULT, the influential UK group who have built an extensive global fan base with hits such as "She Sells Sanctuary," "Rain," "Wild Flower," "Love Removal Machine," "Edie (Ciao Baby)," "The Witch" and "Rise." A new studio album, the first since 2001, is currently being recorded in London with producer Youth (Verve, Primal Scream), who will be adding final touches and mixing. The expected release date for the yet untitled album is September 25, 2007 and will be released in conjunction with The Cult's imprint label, New Wilderness.

The Cult, led by founding members vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, will embark on a series of European arena shows with rock legends The Who starting June 5th. The band will be adding headline dates and festival appearances along the route, building on the overwhelming reaction to their 2006 sell-out world tour. A U.S. headline tour will follow in the fall.

"We have always dreamed of finding a label that allows us artistic freedom and has the muscle to get the music to the people," comments Astbury. "At the heart of this recording is an urban directness of savage rawness and an earnestness that is the center of any great rock and roll band."

"What's especially great about The Cult," A&R men Derek Oliver and Dante Bonutto state, "is their instinctive ability to live in the present, not just reflecting current taste but actually helping to shape it - something you can hear in Ian's contributions to the UNKLE project. They have a magnificent and hugely influential history, but when you bring the classic and the contemporary crashing together in the way that Ian and Billy can, it gives real potential for this new album to be their most exciting ever."

Cult Update

From Cultcentral.com:
The Cult have (almost) signed a record deal. It should be signed at any moment.
The band have finished doing their work in California and will start recording the album on May 18th. Where? London, England. Going back home. I'm hearing that the album will be produced by a couple producers. Sounds like Tony Visconti is a name bantered around to do most of the production, with Steve Jones doing production on a few tracks.
Tours will be Europe in June and July. North America in August and later. The talk is that the record should be out first week of August. Wow, that's fast! Everybody seems to be really happy with it, I'm sure it will be a great album!

Ice Covers South Pole of Mars

• Satellite finds huge ice deposits on Mars' south pole
• Ice 2.3 miles thick in some areas
• Appears to be frozen water covered by layer of frozen CO2
• If melted, ice would cover planet with 36 feet of water

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- A spacecraft orbiting Mars has scanned huge deposits of water ice at its south pole so plentiful they would blanket the planet in 36 feet of water if they were liquid, scientists said Thursday.
The scientists used a joint NASA-Italian Space Agency radar instrument on the European Space Agency Mars Express spacecraft to gauge the thickness and volume of ice deposits at the Martian south pole covering an area larger than Texas.
The deposits, up to 2.3 miles thick, are under a polar cap of white frozen carbon dioxide and water, and appear to be composed of at least 90 percent frozen water, with dust mixed in, according to findings published in the journal Science.Scientists have known that water exists in frozen form at the Martian poles, but this research produced the most accurate measurements of just how much there is.
